La Loire à Vélo is strewn with delightfully charming villages...

Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, a Small City of Character

This small village’s charm is instantly eye-catching! With its architectural heritage including the Abbey church, home to the impressive grave of Vendean General Bonchamps, and small streets in the old district, Saint-Florent-le-Vieil  won’t fail to delight. Top it all off by discovering the breath-taking panoramic view over the Loire from the heights of Mont Glonne.

Turquant, a troglodyte village

Nestled between tuffeau stone cliffs and the Loire, Turquant is a troglodyte site home to artistic craftsmen. The surrounding landscape is typical of the Saumur hills, and the village swings in a constant balance between tradition and modernity.

Montsoreau, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France

The village of Montsoreau is built on the banks of the Loire halfway along the La Loire à Vélo itinerary. Its little streets, tuffeau stone houses and leafy walks will guide you straight to Saumur vineyards, and you will be amazed as you discover the 15th-century château converted into a contemporary art exhibition centre.

Apremont-sur-Allier, frozen in time and one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France

A short distance from “kilometre zero” of La Loire à Vélo, this medieval village in Berry overlooked by its château is the perfect place for relaxing and ambling through. Stop for a picnic amid flower-adorned houses or on the peaceful banks of the Allier, or have lunch on a welcoming terrace at one of the local restaurants. The flower park, listed as a “Remarkable Garden”, will sweep you away to foreign lands with its collection of plant and tree species from all over the world. Get ready for take-off!

Candes-Saint-Martin, a magical view

Situated at the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne, this old fishing port and hotspot for Loire boat building is listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, with its spellbinding scenery and myriad colours. The white tuffeau stone, grey slate roofs, blue sky and, of course, the iridescence of the Loire make it a wonderful setting. The tranquil streets and Saint-Martin collegiate church are also worth discovering, and why not let yourself be tempted to an outing on a traditional Loire boat? The  Belle Adèle and the Amarante are ready and waiting for you for a guided river trip.
